The Buttonwoods Dog Park is part of the larger Warwick City park. This Rhode Island dog park is certainly off the beaten path though. While it seems centrally located off of 117, the drive through the suburbs seems to prove otherwise. With no obvious signs pointing to either the city park or the dog park it may be easy to get lost. After entering into the main park entrance pet owners must pass the normal parking lot and continue along the road, but be careful of the speed bumps, walkers, and bikers out on trails. When all seems lost you come across a field on your left, baseball fields ahead and the dog park on your right.
Looking at the amenities the Warwick dog park seems to pass the test of most necessities. With two sections, one for small dogs, and one for large, it keeps the little dogs safe from unfair rough housing. There are double gates for both sections so there will be no great escapes here. The park has a set of rules that dog owners are supposed to abide by, and by the looks of it, most do. The park also has free dog poop bags and empty trashcans but the patrons seem to really care for the space because they leave items for others to use and clean up after themselves. This being said, there are not a lot of dog bowls left, and with no running water it could get hot for a dog here. However, many patrons have left chairs for others to use while they sit and chat with fellow dog loving friends while they watch their dog run “free”. In the larger dog section there is gratuitous shade in the afternoon underneath the trees and many people chose that position as they have their casual conversation. The smaller dog section has fewer choices with a few very small evergreen trees that only provide shade in the morning or late afternoon when you can hide from the sun behind the tree. The biggest complaint seems to be how ‘dusty’ the place was. A lot of the grass has been killed, leaving only sand and dusty dirt. Overall, while Warwick Dog park may be hard to find and a bit dusty, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. Check out the park for yourself if you’re in the area and leave a comment about your experience here!
