In true Providence fashion Dexter dog park is located within a city park. Compared to more suburban dog parks it is not hard to find this green space within the city. Dexter Park has a lot of people who use it on a daily basis, mostly local communities looking for a green space or a jungle gym for their children. A beautiful space with a building that looks like a castle in the background is a pretty nice venue to bring your dog. However, having a dog park located in the center of the city park seems to be awkward placement.
The dog park itself has a wonderful fence surrounding it and has a double gate, keeping dogs from escaping. Dexter Park has both small dog and large dog areas which will keep the little dogs from being bullied too much. However, the small dog side is considerably smaller and I noticed that since the park has so few occupants small dog owners bring their dogs into the large dog side.
Looking at the amenities of the park, it has poop bags provided and other owners leave more attached to the fences. The trash cans are empty showing that it is cared for on a regular basis. However, there is no running water or water bowls. And with a lack of shade you should bring your own water and bowl to keep your dog safe on a hot day. Many of the usual clients claimed they loved the space and it was convenient to them. The locals who usually use the park seem to be friendly and really considerate when it comes to other dogs.
However, the lack of activity surprised me and I inquired to why I had only heard of Gano Park, located ten minutes away, but never of Dexter Park. Apparently, the dog park is new and a local resident was not happy with the addition to the city park. Disliking the barking and extra traffic the dog park had brought, the resident harassed young patrons, resulting in only a small, loyal group of regulars.Town meetings have been held since then in order to make a deal between the two groups. This explains the lack of people there which is unfortunate because it is a great space. Overall, it seems like the dog owners are respectful to each other and the space, while small dogs may venture into the large dog area, it is at their own risk. There is a good amount of grass and plenty of room for the dogs to run free. As long as your dog isn’t barking too loudly it is a great spot to bring fido.
